Cohen's Moral Panic Theory

Cohen Moral Panic is a theory that suggests that society values and principles have been challenged. This can be describe as a certain person or group that threatens these value mainly through the media. This theory can be put into practice by analysing one of the Rolling Stone covers. This features Lady Gaga half naked and guns attached to her bra. This is a great example for moral panic, this is due to society wouldn't allow women to dress and act in this way. Cohen might describe this as as a threat to law and order due to the effect it has on the public eye. Although it is this genre of image that entices the audience to buy the magazine in the first place. This way Lady Gaga is portraying a new social aspect to be different and new which the audience wants to be involved with.

Richard Dyers Theory

Richard Dyers Star Theory suggests that all "stars" are created by the media. Therefore getting their name known in media institutions is a positive way is crustal to their career. Also Subsidiary Media contributes to this greatly, via magazines and other forms of publicity apart from the main media platform. Even though the music industry is one of the to get to fame, some people manage to leapfrog past the performing stage by either dating  a famous person to get to publicity.
An example of this is when popular magazines features famous "stars" on the front cover, therefore attracting the public's attention and drawing the audience in. This theory suggests that the public wants to "complete" their image of the celebrity who's surrounded in mystery which is one of the motivations for following that celebratory via magazines and appearances.

Feminist Theory

The Feminist Theory is where some women believe that they have been subjected as objects to men. This ideology can be proven by looking at certain media texts in music magazines. The majority of music magazines have attracted their audiences using what the Feminist Theory explains as "the male gaze" created by Laura Mulvey. This belief relates to photos of women that some people might deem inappropriate, an example of this is Lily Alien on the front cover of "Q" magazine. Though this cover doesn't reveal any sensitive parts of a woman, its message is clearly going to draw the male eye. Therefore women have strong evidence that they are seen as a sex appeal in some media texts.
Some can argue that the media has been constructed for men, this can be explained through film productions. In earlier years of film there has always been a male dominated role in a film. Women weren't usually casted for the lead role in a film but always enough where casted as a second for the male to either fall in love with, or rescue a damsel in distress. This would mean that these roles for women where required to be attractive which would make the male population eager to see the film. A great example would be the James Bond films. Lead male, saves lives and always gets the attractive women. This has been a trend throughout all the James Bond films, one of the reason its sold well.

Sunday 5 February 2012

For this section of my AS media coursework my task is to conduct a survey in relation to a music magazine. For this magazine I must decide whether to use either "Quantitive or Qualitive" questions for my survey. I have researched into both and have chosen my outcome.
Quantitive research- This is where the survey is filled out using ticked boxes with the answers already provided. This ensures that the person that is filling out the form will be more likely to answer all of the questions because it wont take to long. Also the information that the owner of the survey will get will be specific to what he/she will want to find out.
Qualitive research- These types of answers can be a lot more in depth, though this all depends on the person who fills out the form. It requires the person filling out the form to write a description according to the question. Though this means the answers can be varied.
Therefore based on my research I have conducted I have chosen to use the "Qantitive" research. I have chosen this for a number of reasons, one of them is that I can get the precise answers to my questions so I can produce the best outcome for my magazine. In addition, using this method I will be able to get more people to answer my survey mainly though using a social networking site.
